Description:

Love Letter is a strict card game of bluffing, deduction, luck and player elimination. Each player is a suitor trying to court the lovely Princess Annette who locked herself in her palace. The goal of the game is to write a love letter and to get it delivered first to her.

All players has each two cards in their hands (from a deck of 16, numbered one to eight) and must choose each turn which to play. Powerful cards can lead to early gains, but make you a target for others.

A player wins a round by being the last man standing or by having the highest card at the end. The winner of the round receives a token of affection. Depending on the number of players, four till seven tokens are required to be the winner of this game./p>

Setup

Shuffle the 16 cards to form a face-down draw deck. Remove the top card of the deck from the game without looking at it.

If you are playing a two-player game, take three more cards from the top of the deck and place them to the side, face up. They will not be used during this round.

8: Princess Annette

Hampered only by the naÃ¯vetÃ© of youth, Princess Annette is elegant, charming, and beautiful. Obviously, you want the princess to carry your letter. However, she is self-conscious about matters of the heart, and if confronted, will toss your letter in the fire and deny ever seeing it. â€¦

The people of the Premium Edition

The following cards are used only in 5 to 8 player games of Love Letter Premium:

9: Bishop Vinizio

Measured and calculating, Bishop Vinizio may come across as a schemer or opportunist. The truth, though, is that he cares deeply for the welfare of his congregants, and will go to great lengths to protect and help them.

Discarding the Bishop allows you to name a number and a player. If the player has that number in their hand, you get a Token of Affection. If this would give you enough Tokens to win the game, then you win immediately and the game ends. If you gained a Token of Affection from this effect, then the player whose card you effectively revealed with the Bishop may discard their card (but doesn't apply its effects, unless it is the Princess, see page 8) and draw a new one. â€¦

Love Letter Premium Edition Rules

The guard looked Bartolemew Kaiss up and down for a moment, then frowned. "I'M sorry, Master Kaiss", she said, "but the princess is not seeing visitors at this time. She is, of course, in despair over the arrest of her mother". "OF course", the young composer said, nodding and looking appropriately sympathetic. "But Iam not just visiting, you see. Her Highness requested my instruction. We are to practice her singing".

"THE princess already has a vocal maestro", the gruff woman replied, raising an eyebrow. "I'M sure he knows that, Odette", said a kind voice echoing down the hall that connected the residence to the palace. The two turned to see Susannah, one of Princess Annette's handmaids, walking toward them. "What the good composer means to say is that the Princess requested his work for their practice". The young woman smiled at the dour guard, then turned to give Bartolemew a conspiratorial wink. â€¦

Love Letter Solitaire is a single player adaptation of the game. It is assumed the official rules are known before reading the rules for this single player variant. Ideally the original game has been played a few times as well. The following rules built upon those rules; they do not replace them.

Deal one card to the player and put one card face down; that face down card is the player 's secret agent.

Make room for a discard pile; this discard pile is shared between the player and the princess's retinue. The discard pile is open; the cards may be spread out, so it is clear which cards have already been discarded. â€¦
