Description:

Hive is a bug-themed tile-placement game where players try to capture their opponent's queen bee by completely surrounding it, while avoiding the capture of their own queen.

Hive is a board game with a difference. There is no board! The pieces are added to the playing area thus creating the board. As more and more pieces are added the game becomes a fight to see who can be the first to capture the opposing Queen Bee.

The soldier ants battle to keep control of the outside of the hive, whilst the Beetles climb up to dominate the top. Spiders moving into holding positions as the Grass Hoppers jump in for the kill. Keeping one eye on the hive and the other on your opponents reserves, the tension builds as one wrong move will see your Queen Bee quickly engulfed;.... game over!

Each player has eleven hexagonal tiles with 5 different insects (queen bee, beetle, grasshopper, spider and soldier ant) and each having a unique way of moving (like in chess).

The rules are very simple but the game is still challenging and planning, tactical depth and a spatial vision are welcome to win the game. The player who first totally surround his opponent's queen wins the game.

  • 2 Queen Bee (Yellow-Gold)
  • 4 Spiders (Brown)
  • 4 Beetles (Purple)
  • 6 Grasshoppers (Green)
  • 6 Soldier Ants

Setup

Each player takes all 11 pieces of one color and places them face up in front of them.

Object of the Game

The object of the game is to totally surround your opponent's Queen Bee whilst at the same time trying to stop your opponent from doing the same to you.

The pieces surrounding the Queen Bee can be made up of a mixture of both your pieces and your opponent's. …

  1. The beetle can be easily underestimated but if moved on top of your opponents queen bee, it can be a devastating piece as you can then place directly around it.

  2. Keep hoppers in reserve for end moves, to get into positions that are surrounded.

  3. Bring out spiders early on in the game as they are very good as short runners when the hive is still small.

  4. Keep an eye on your opponents holding set, even if it looks like you're in a losing position, you can turn the game around by blocking spaces if they have no hoppers or beetles to place. …

Object of the Game

The object of Hive: Venom is the same as Hive: Original except you can win by either surrounding your opponent's Queen Bee or Queen Wasp.

Setup

Each player takes all 14 pieces of one colour and places them any side up in front of them.

Game Play

Each of the original Hive pieces has a Hive: Venom piece on the reverse side.

The rules are exactly the same as the original Hive except a player can either choose to place, move or flip a piece. You can choose which side to play face up except with the Queen Bee which must always be placed facing up. …

We highly recommend playing with only one additional Hive expansion at a time whilst familiarising yourself with the rules.

Once you have mastered them individually it's time to take on the ultimate Hive challenge by combining Hive: Venom with the Honeycombo, Predators and Guardians expansions for a superbug showdown. But, If you really want to mix things up, try including Hive: Swarm rules to push your mental skills to the absolute limit and discover who has the definitive Hive Mind.

Hive Swarm

Setup

Hive: Swarm can be played with Hive: Original or Hive: Venom, including any other Hive expansions. Both players select their initial hand which includes their Queen Bee and three secretly selected pieces of their colour. The remaining pieces are placed into the Swarm bag.
