Description:

Arthur and Mordred: rival leaders of a fledgling nation, each slain by the other's hand. Britain is leaderless, fractured and vulnerable.

For the good of the country, a leader must unite the Scots, Welsh and Romano-British; not by conquest but by diplomacy.

You are the members of King Arthur's court. Whether a loyal knight, a scheming lord, or an ambitious noblewoman, you have one thing in common: power.

As prospective leaders, each player will use their power to benefit the factions, gaining influence among their ranks. The player with the greatest influence over the most powerful faction will be crowned the new ruler of Britain.

Beware the threat from across the sea. If a region is not under the clear control of one faction, the area is vulnerable to invasion by the Saxons. If four regions fall to the Saxons, the search for a new ruler ends immediately, and the player who has done the most to unite the factions is declared the leader of the resistance.

Object of the Game

In The King is Dead players do not play as the Scots, Welsh or Romano-British factions. Instead, they play as powerful members of the late King Arthur's court, vying to be declared ruler over all three groups. …

The Crown

Out of respect for the dead king, the player changes the order of the power struggles. The player swaps the position of any two face-up Region Cards, including the one currently being contested if they wish, and places their Crown Token on one of them.

Any card with a Crown Token on it may not be swapped. It would be in poor taste to squabble over a region dear to Arthur's heart so soon after his passing.

Garrison

The player switches 2 Followers in 1 region with 1 Follower from a bordering region. These Followers may be from the same faction if the player wishes. The player may not use this action to immediately undo a switch made by the preceding player. …

The Mordred Variant

This tough variant is only recommended for experienced players of The King is Dead.

The mad King Mordred has been killed, but his Followers remain to plague the land. The black Followers represent Mordred's loyalists, disrupting the hard-won peace and sowing dissent in Aquae Sulis and Din Eidyn. The rules are followed as usual, but there are additional considerations to be aware of.

During setup, Aquae Sulis and Din Eidyn each start with 1 black Follower Cube. Consequently, only 3 random Followers will be placed in these regions. …
