To build the perfect sandwich, you must use the freshest ingredients, accent it with flavorful condiments, and serve it up with a proud smile.

But in the game of Hoagie, building the perfect sandwich isn't easy; to win, you must stack your sandwich with great tasting fixings while keeping Merideth, Bo, and Reuben, a trio of sandwich destroying oogies, from spoiling your ingredients.

  • Instructions

Object of the Game

Playing Hoagie is simple; be the first to build the perfect sandwich while fouling your opponents ingredients with spoiler cards.

Setup

Deal seven cards to each player. Place the remaining cards into the center of the table to use as a draw pile. Remember to leave space for a discard pile.

The Cards

The Hoagie card game has these 3 different card types: fresh ingredient cards, spoiled ingredient cards, and special action cards.

Fresh Ingredient Cards

Play these cards face up in front of you to build a perfect sandwich and win the game.

Spoiled Ingredient Cards

Play these cards over opponents' fresh ingredient cards to foul their hoagies.

Special Action Cards

Play these cards to tilt the game to your advantage.

Game Play

To win, you must begin a turn with a perfect sandwich, made up of five unspoiled ingredient cards, face up on the table, side by side, in this order from left to right: bread, meat, cheese, lettuce, and bread.

Take turns in clockwise order around the table. A single turn is divided into the following 2 parts.

Play a single card from your hand to do one of the following:

  1. Play a fresh ingredient card in front of you to build your sandwich.

Replace a spoiled ingredient card in your sandwich by placing a fresh ingredient card of the same type over it.

Spoil one of your opponents ingredients by playing a spoiled ingredient card of the same type over his or her fresh ingredient card.

Skip any players next turn by placing a Skip card face up in front his or her sandwich.

Reverse the game's play order by playing a Reverse card.

Play 2 additional cards from your hand after playing a Double-play card.

  2. Draw your hand back up to 7 cards at the end of your turn.

Special Rules

  • You may have no more than seven cards in your hand at any time during the game.

  • You may only play matching spoiled ingredient cards over opponent's fresh ingredient cards. For example, you may only play a spoiled lettuce card over an opponent's fresh lettuce card. You may not play a spoiled lettuce card over an opponent's fresh meat card.

  • You may only play fresh ingredient cards over spoiled ingredients of the same type. For example, you may play a fresh bread card over a spoiled bread card. You may not play a fresh bread card over a spoiled cheese card.

  • You may not play fresh ingredient cards over other players' spoiled ingredient cards.

  • You may not play spoiled ingredients over your own fresh ingredient cards.

  • If another player places a skip card in front of your sandwich, when your turn comes up, discard the skip card and take no other action.

  • If you do not have a playable card in your hand, discard 1 card from your hand and redraw a replacement card and end your turn. You may not play your new card until your next turn.

  • When you play a double play card, you may play 2 additional cards (not counting the double play card). Remember to draw your hand back up to 7 cards.
